Woo ha! In case he needs it the Institute of Physics has a BRILLIANT careers advisor who is free for members to consult. Her email is vishanti.lall@iop.org and if he's not a member he can join at www.iop.org (listen to me doing advertising - I work for them!). I know Vishanti is the bees knees because she used to work for me and has advised me in the past - helping me get my current job. She's particularly good if you don't know what to do with yourself.
As a physics grad I know for sure he's had an incredibly hard slog and what a relief it must be now - you must be so so proud! Please pass on best wishes from a fellow physicist (and knitter!)
